NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s renowned snooker player Majid Ali, a recipient of the Asian Under-21 silver medal, committed suicide in his hometown Samundri near Faisalabad in Punjab on Thursday. He was 28.
Majid had been battling depression since his playing days and reportedly used a wood-cutting machine to end his life, as confirmed by the police.
Majid had proudly represented Pakistan in numerous international events and achieved a high ranking within the national snooker circuit.
His untimely passing marks the second loss of a snooker player in the span of a month, following the demise of Muhammad Bilal, another esteemed international snooker player, due to a cardiac arrest.
Majid’s brother, Umar, revealed that he had been grappling with depression since his teenage years, and recently experienced a resurgence of the condition, leading to this tragic outcome.
“It is a horrifying thing for us because we never expected he would take his own life,” said Umar.
The Pakistan Billiards and Snooker chairman, Alamgir Sheikh said the entire community was saddened by Majid’s death.
“He had so much talent and was young and we expected so much from him to bring laurels for Pakistan,” he said.
